Ember Cottage, Cornwall

Last year before I headed off to the land of glitter and fairytales (panto) I took a little break down to Cornwall for a bit of R&R with one of my best mates. It did such a good job of rejuvenating me ready for a whole season of boos, hisses and it’s behind yous that I was keen to do it again  this year before I got my wings out one more time for the lads.

So last month, me and Him toddled off down to Polruan, an ancient fishing village in South East Cornwall to stay at Ember Cottage. If you are looking for a real ‘middle of nowhere’ getaway, this place is PERFECT. Polruan is tiny and gorgeous, right on an estuary and the River Fowey with it’s own little quayside. The roads are narrow and steep, and the nearest town, Fowey,  is across the bay which you get to via the tiny little village ferry! It’s proper picture postcard stuff  with the most friendly locals around. We thoroughly enjoyed cooked breakfasts in Crumpets Café and a few pints and a fresh seafood dinner in The Lugger Inn.

We EVEN did a 3 hour walk round the estuary. Just in case you thought all we did was eat and drink.

But really, we loved coming home and getting cosy at the cottage. The whole place is light and airy, and decorated with a ‘seaside’ theme but with so many gorgeous design details- the artwork, the cushions, the mirrors- all just scream love and care and make Ember feel totally luxurious in a really non-pretentious way.

There’s a good sized living room with a irresistibly squashy sofa, and a beautiful old fireplace, where we snuggled down with hot mugs of tea and crumpets post walk.

The kitchen is fully equipped and again, has loads of those details which I adored, vintage tins,  LED floor lights leading to the downstairs bathroom and even our own little seagull to keep watch on things!

The cottage actually sleeps 5 with two double rooms and a single, plus a bathroom on each floor. Each bedroom is gorgeous and individually decorated, whilst maintaining that bright and airy feel.

We stayed in the top floor bedroom, which we J’ADORED. A wonderfully comfy bed, two skylights, blackout blinds and those all important design details!

Plus the bedroom opens out into an en suite bathroom, complete with a free standing, rolltop bath with views out over the harbour. DIVINE.

We made a couple of excursions out (though could have quite happily stayed ensconced in that bath for the entire trip tbh) and got the ferry across to Fowey. WHICH IS SO LOVELY!

There, we wandered round the cobbled streets, darting into the bookshop to crib up on some Daphne Du Maurier (when in Rome!), stocking up on local homemade fudge, and sipping a few pints with a view at The Galleon Inn.

We also day tripped out to the Eden Project which was just awesome. I’ve been before but it’s always worth a visit. We wandered round the big biodomes, getting lost (and pretending to be Rambo) in the rainforest and breathing deeply the herbs and fruits in the Mediterranean dome. There was also a Christmas Craft fair on in aid of Macmillan Cancer, which meant we got sample happy on craft gin, meats and cheeses. BONUS.

We absolutely loved our stay down in Polruan, and were so sad to say goodbye to the rugged Cornish landscape and Ember Cottage itself! For more information on the cottage, visit the website here!
