I LOVE BEER. In fact, when I came cantering into the blogging world all wide-eyed and dizzy, my first ever blog post was about beer. So last week when the lovely lot over at genius food app Zomato invited me to a beer tasting evening at Bierschenke I said YES PLEASE very loudly.
Situated in the heart of the city between Liverpool Street and Bank, Bierschenke offers a Bavarian Bierkeller experience right in the middle of the big smoke. Filled with long wooden tables and bar girls in gingham beer maid outfits (srsly where can I get one of those cos I would look hella good in one) it’s the perfect place to go with a big bunch of rowdy pals to sup and munch after a long slog at work.
We kicked off the evenings booze-soaked proceedings with a Bierschenke Weißbier: a top-fermented, cloudy wheat beer accompanied by salted pretzels as big as my face. I normally wrinkle my nose up at wheat beer (I don’t know why but they always taste of farmyards to me. Not that I go round licking farmyards or anything.) but this was actually DELICIOUS, with light notes of citrus and banana (yes I did actually LEARN some stuff about beer, I didn’t JUST glug.)
Once we’d done a bit of mingling and put faces to twitter handles we settled down around our table for some very detailed beer swilling and tasting. We tasted the Bierschenke Kellerbier, an unstrained bottom-fermented lager which had a pleasant spicy, smooth taste, the Bierschenke Lager which was VERY QUAFFABLE and a million miles away from bland Euro-Lagers one is normally faced with, and the Krombacher Pils, which was perhaps my favourite of the lot. Bitter in taste, clear in colour and full bodied to the sniff.
Heads dancing slightly we were, by this point more than ready for some grub. And I mean, my god, did we get some. Bierschenke do amazing platters, designed to be shared by the whole table, and GOOD GOD there was so much food. SO MUCH SAUSAGE (insert your own pun here).
SORRY WOULD YOU JUST LOOK AT THAT SPREAD!? Roasted pork shank, meatloaf, schnitzel with mushroom sauce, dumplings, red cabbage, sauerkraut, mashed potato, chips and the SAUSAGES! HEAPS of frankfurters, debreciners, nürnbergers and bratwurst. If anyone thinks German food is not all that, a platter of this taste sensation will undoubtedly change your mind.
We geared up for the next round of beers with a quick round of Bier Schapps- a beer based liqueur. Way nicer than it sounds.
Next up on the slurping train, we had Paulaner Dunkel, a dark Bavarian beer with caramel and chocolate notes and to finish up, Schlenkerla Rauchbier, a dark smoked beer. It had a sort of meaty flavour, so I named it Beer Ham, which I felt rolled more easily off the tongue.
AND THEN THE PUDDINGS!
Oh good god, cream cheese pancakes, fluffy cut up sugared pancakes, perfectly flaky apple strudel, ice-cream, lashings of custard and apple sauce and perhaps the most genius of all, Bierschenke’s take on a tirimisu- a BEERAMISU!
I practically rolled all the way home.
I had an amazing night, meeting new blog based pals and getting to know the team at Zomato. I also massively recommend Bierschenke for a noisy get-together with a huge gang of your chums. Order litres of beer and heaving platters of sausages and go to town.
