Brighton Fringe- Facepaint and Sunshine
Oh joy of joys! Rapture of RAPTURE! This week I’ve been down at the SEASIDE doing some CABARETING! Brighton Fringe beckoned with its gloriously sunny arty open arms to welcome us for a week of sun, sea, sand and sequins. The perfect combination in my humble opinion.
Brighton Fringe feels a bit like the little sister of Edinburgh Fringe, a bit more chilled, a bit less commercial. And though I j’adore EdFringe with all my heart and theatrical loins, it’s quite nice to be able to walk down the streets of Brighton during the Fringe without having 6th formers with puppets shoving leaflets into your hand which is quite pleasant. We were down there with Sphinx Theatre doing a piece called A Berlin Kabaret, a gutsy, passionate, funny and angry look at Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. A little bit of Brecht (massive lad) and a whole lot of attitude. And even more facepaint.
Luckily for us the sun was BEAMING DOWN so in some downtime from the show we were able to sample the delights of Brighton. A good old wander down the lanes, darting into old second hand bookshops, followed by lunch at Bread and Milk.
Our venue was The Warren which is part of Other Place Brighton which was hosting a wonderful eclectic mix of shows- comedy, sketch, musicals as well as plays and cabaret. It really was like being in a mini-Edinburgh.
With the shows being a wonderful roaring success, there was just time to catch a couple of Brighton’s theatrical highlights- a bus masquerading as a playwright and a blue plaque to the most famous theatrical agent of all time. CHECK IT:
Oh beautiful Brighton, you were all I dreamed of and more. The fringe here is a wonderful place to try if the thought of Edfringe can be a little overwhelming. The flavour and vibe are the same and the quality of work is just as good too. To find out more about Brighton Fringe, visit the website here.
I wave farewell to the seaside, and turn my gaze t’ward a well earned week off. I’ve actually just cracked open a beer. Yes on a Monday lunchtime DON’T JUDGE ME.
Enjoy the sunshine folks. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
